Outline - Speech #2

Title:

College Campus Safety and Security

Introduction Hook Sentence:

Do you feel safe on your campus?

Problems:

  • Most times students feel scared to walk home from a night class or even from another dorm when it starts to get dark out. This is a big problem because violence is getting worse in the United States not just on college campuses, but everywhere. Campus safety needs to do a better job of reassuring students that they are in good hands and safe at all times of the day. In Iowa City alone this past semester there have been multiple incidents of crime, whether this be inside of a dorm, or on the streets.
Examples:
  • Male student in Petersen Hall watching girls sleep at night.
  • Male found roaming around Catlett Hall with a knife.
  • Two men shot downtown.
  • University of Iowa student abducted and found dead. (not on campus)
  • Rape Victims (from all college campuses)
Solution to the Issue:

  • We should have patrols outside for reassurance and make sure that us as individuals get home okay. Nite Ride should be talked about more to students. It should also be more reliable and we should possibly have more cars available. There should also be more code blue posts around campus. If there is a problem a student can push it and someone will come help in a minute or less.
  • Even small changes could make the biggest difference.
Justification:

  • It will reduce the number of incidences on campus and make the students feel much safer. It would be an overall better environment for students to live in.

  1. Does the writer need to provide more vivid description of the problem? I like the examples to help explain the problem.
Does the proposal need to provide more details on the steps to be taken to implement the solution? Explain the steps to be taken in more detail.
Should the writer provide more reasons? discuss alternative solutions? present cost-benefit analysis, bring in some precedents? Explain the costs of the solutions.
Are there enough evidences to persuade the audience about the seriousness of the problem and the justification for the solution? Add more to your justification.
Has the writer considered priorities and values of the audience in selecting and developing reasons and evidences? Give statics of rape stats or other statics.

  2. This has a good and clear organization, which makes it easy to follow as an audience member. I would just add the opposition, expand into detail (possibly cost--benefit analysis, discussing precedents) and incorporate the 3 sources.
